EMOM
Also known as: Every Minute On the Minute
A conditioning format where you perform a prescribed set of reps at the start of every minute, then rest for whatever time remains before the next minute begins. EMOM trades AMRAP's pacing freedom for a forced rhythm — the clock, not your own judgement, decides when the next round starts.
Formula
EMOM score = clean rounds completed within their minute + failed rounds (started late or spilled past the minute mark) [duration fixed in advance, e.g. 'EMOM 12' = 12 total minutes]Example
EMOM 10: minute 1 — 12 kettlebell swings, minute 2 — 8 burpees, alternating. An athlete finishes the swings in 35 seconds (25s rest), the burpees in 50 seconds (10s rest). By minute 9 fatigue has crept in and burpees now take the full 60 seconds with no rest before the next round — that's a failed round even though every rep still got done.
How Afitpilot Uses This
Afitpilot logs EMOM scores as clean rounds versus failed rounds against the block's prescribed movements. Like AMRAP, there's no deterministic target rep count for the block as a whole, so EMOM work is excluded from planned volume/tonnage totals — the clean-vs-failed round count is the honest scorecard.

Known Limitations
- •The forced rest window means EMOM can mask a genuine capacity drop — an athlete who's able to do the reps but only just makes the minute looks identical in the round count to one cruising with 30 seconds to spare, until they actually fail a round.
- •Multi-movement EMOMs (alternating minutes) conflate two different fatigue profiles into one score — a failed round could come from either movement, and the log doesn't distinguish which.
- •Very short work windows relative to the movement's normal set length can encourage rushed, sloppy reps just to beat the clock, which the round-completion score doesn't penalize.
Science Context
EMOM formatting doesn't have a distinct research literature of its own — physiologically it's interval training with a fixed, externally-imposed work-to-rest ratio rather than a self-paced one. The forced-rest structure is closer to classic interval protocols (e.g. Tabata's underlying research) than to AMRAP's continuous-effort model, which is part of why EMOMs are commonly used to rehearse pacing and rest discipline for a specific rep scheme rather than to test raw conditioning capacity the way an AMRAP does.
